Dentists are trained professionals who help care for the teeth and mouth. Seeing a dentist regularly will help you to maintain a high level of dental health. This may have a direct impact on your overall well-being.

However, myths and misled preconceptions can confuse and result in (sometimes) irreversible damage to your mouth. For example, the myth that chewing gum works like brushing your teeth is wrong, and while some chewing gums serve as aids to oral health, they still don’t reach the level of being able to replace brushing your teeth.

To help you steer clear of these misconceptions, AIM DENTAL CENTRE has debunked three of the most widely believed myths about dentistry.

Myth 1: Prevention is always better than cure
The old saying “prevention is better than cure” is frequently used to make a case for more preemptive dental hygiene measures, which we all agree is a good idea. This said, it is often understood to mean prevention is the cure for all dental issues. This is not always the case. For example, brushing your teeth harder is not a good idea as it can damage tooth enamel and lead to gum recession. Similarly, no matter what preventative measures you have taken, wisdom teeth can cause issues that need attention.

Myth 2: Flossing is not necessary
Good oral hygiene and flossing are integral to maintaining good oral health. We cannot avoid plaque as it comes from our food, and plaque deposits promote tooth decay. Flossing removes up to 80% of plaque. This is why dentists recommend a daily flossing regimen.

Myth 3: Procrastination
We see many clients who come in with severe pain and discomfort. Often they were aware of their dental condition but did not seek treatment until they became symptomatic. At this point, they are desperate and in agony. Procrastination when it comes to dental issues will cause unneeded suffering, necessitate added procedures and cost more. Anyone who tells you your mouth can wait does not have your best interest in mind.
